On September 18, 1967, a petition of the Athens County Commissioners within the territorial limits of Athens County, Ohio was made to the Director of the Ohio Department of Development for the creation of a Metropolitan Housing Authority, declaring that unsanitary and unsafe inhabited housing accommodations exists in such areas and there is a shortage of safe and sanitary housing accommodations in such area available to persons who lack the amount of income which is necessary to enable them, without financial assistance, to live in decent, safe and sanitary dwellings without congestion.
On April 8th, 1970, as established pursuant to the Federal National Housing Act of 1937 Athens Metropolitan Housing Authority was created and declared to exist, organized as a Political Subdivision pursuant to the authority of the Constitution and statute of the State of Ohio under Section 3735.26 of the Ohio Revised Code for the purpose of providing decent, safe and affordable housing within the territorial limits of Athens County, Ohio.
The mission of the Athens Metropolitan Housing Authority is to assist low-income families, including those who are elderly or disabled, with safe, decent, and affordable housing opportunities as those families strive to achieve self-sufficiency and improve the quality of their lives. The Housing Authority is committed to providing professional services in a caring, efficient, and ethical manner, and in developing and maintaining working partnerships with its clients and other community agencies in order to accomplish its mission.
